About Us

The Good Shift started with hockey, family, and one very real wake-up call.

Years ago, a girl fell in love with a boy who played hockey. She sat in the stands at his beer league games, cheered him on, married him, and eventually they had two boys who fell in love with the game too.

These days, the rink is basically our second home. Josh still plays, now at the semi-pro level, and coaches our boys too. Hockey has become part of the rhythm of our family.

But The Good Shift really began when our oldest son wanted to move from house league into travel hockey.

He tried out, made the team, and then we saw the cost.

It was roughly seven times what we had been paying.

We weren’t prepared for it, and we had to leave without signing him up. It gutted both of us. We eventually figured out a way to make it work, he tried out again, and he made the team again.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about all the other families in that same position.

How many kids are ready to keep growing in the sport, but can’t because the cost of hockey grows faster than their family can keep up? How many kids watch their teammates move on simply because of money?

That was the moment The Good Shift became more than an idea.

I’ve spent more than 25 years in apparel design, and I realized I could take something I know, something I genuinely love doing, and use it to help keep kids in hockey.

Because we believe this sport gives kids so much more than hockey skills.

It teaches them how to do hard things. How to lose with grace and win with humility. How to show up for teammates. How to develop grit, courage, discipline, resilience, and mental toughness.

And the bonds it creates are real. Between players. Parents. Coaches. Families. Entire communities.

There is something about hockey people that feels like an unspoken connection.

The Good Shift exists to celebrate that community and give back to it.

Our hope is to help families with things like gear, league fees, and other costs that can become barriers to staying in the game, and eventually to grow this far beyond our own rink and help kids across the country keep playing.

Because money should never be the reason a kid has to walk away from a sport they love.

Family. Team. Community.
Make every shift count.
